Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts. It is a modern variation of the practice of paying finder's-fees for the introduction of new clients to a business.
Affiliate marketing is typically done on a pay-per-click (PPC) basis. Publishers (affiliates) are paid when a customer clicks on a link that directs them to a merchant’s website. In some cases, the merchant may also pay the publisher a commission for any sales generated from the customer’s visit. In affiliate marketing, merchants pay commissions to publishers on each sale generated through an affiliate link. There are four parties involved in affiliate marketing: the merchant (also known as ‘retailer’ or ‘brand’), the network (that contains offers for the affiliate to choose from and also takes care of the payments), the publisher (also known as ‘the affiliate’), and the customer.
